Types of Stainless Steel

History of Stainless Steel

The history of stainless steel dates back to the early 1900s, when metallurgist Harry Brearley of Sheffield, England was attempting to develop a corrosion-resistant alloy for use in gun barrels. In 1913, he stumbled on a stainless steel alloy while conducting experiments with high-chromium, low-carbon steel. The alloy was found to be highly corrosion resistant and strong, and Brearley, initially at least, began producing it for use in cutlery.

Over the next few decades, the production and use of stainless steel expanded rapidly, with the development of new alloys and production methods. In the 1930s, stainless steel was used in the construction of the iconic Empire State Building in New York City, and in the 1950s, it began to be used extensively in the aerospace and defense industries.
